What We Offer
Each program and learner’s needs are unique. Exam Essentials can customize many of our offerings to meet them. See examples below and contact us to get more a precise quote.
Lectures
We offer lectures in person or via video conference. Some lecture topics can be combined.
Our current topics include:
- Language for sensitive exams*
- Consent from a patient perspective
- Medical and research history and how it affects practice and health outcomes today
How gender is being conceived differently than 20 years ago and why it matters to medical providers
If you don’t see a lecture you want, let us know. If we think we can do a good job, we might design it for you!
Why so much emphasis on language?
It can be difficult to understand that exam maneuvers are the easiest thing we teach. After all, they are very important! They take practice to do well, and when not done well, they can cause significant physical pain and/or injury.
Communication skills seem like they should be much easier. We already know words and the mechanics of speaking. Sometimes this part of medicine is taught passively, as something students will develop on their own. But language is often a big part of patient comfort. How to talk with patients about genital health professionally, adjusting for a patient’s comfort levels, and how to communicate comfort and care non-verbally… Skills like these usually take more time and practice to learn because students must first unlearn their automatic ways of communicating, in order to build their new, intentional use of language.

Lecture & Demonstration
Suitable for a large group of learners, this lecture covers greeting the patient, performing the exam/s, ending the exam and talking with a patient about any health concerns. A demonstration is included to help learners visualize exam maneuvers and flow. Appropriate language choices are also explained.
Students have the opportunity to ask questions any time during the lecture or demonstration. Separate lectures and demonstrations are done to show exams for breast/pelvic models and penile/prostate models. They are billed separately so that one may be ordered if the other is not needed.
This service is a flat fee for up to 50 students. If you have more students and would like this service, accommodations can be discussed
Small Group Instruction
This experience is meant for students to get instruction and feedback on a personal level. Included in the instruction is information on: greeting the patient, language choices, performing the exam/s, ending the exam and talking with a patient about any health concerns.
Group size is limited so that students can get the attention they need to succeed in understanding the information being presented. This is also appropriate for individuals who want more time, instruction, or who already have their degrees and want some more practice with the specific exam. The instruction given is the same as in the Lecture + Demonstration, and during the experiential portion students practice doing the greeting and exam maneuvers on and with feedback from the instructor.
The fee for Small Group Instruction is per student.
Small Group Instruction Minus Breast Exam
This experience is exactly the same as the Small Group Instruction listed above except no breast exam is taught or practiced. The price for this experience is slightly lower per student and designed to help programs streamline the price and experience.
No similar streamlined product is available for the penile, testicular, and digital rectal exams exists.
The fee for Small Group Instruction Minus Breast Exam is per student.
Practice with Corrections Only
For people who have previously had our Small Group Instruction or Small Group Instruction Minus Breast, this offers a chance to practice just the physical maneuvers of the exam in a faster paced environment where the instructor provides corrections and tips but does not explain how to do the exam nor what wording or phrases to use in any depth.
The fee for Practice with Corrections Only is per student.
Video Instruction
A video of our standard instruction will be available for purchase at a future date. This is appropriate for people who:
- Do not have the opportunity to learn from us in person
- Learn well by listening and/or watching
- Want to prepare for our instruction or follow up our instruction with a refresher
- For programs to show students or employees instead of having us do a Lecture + Demonstration
The fee for Video Instruction will be decided when the videos are ready!
Documents
Exam Essentials offers written learner versions of the exams and language suggestions for free with any of the above services. These are shared with organizers and up to the program or individual to distribute.
The fee for our documents is nothing when combined with any service above. If you really want the documents but not a product above, contact us. We’ll work something out.
